Peninsula Ride (4 Nov 2017)

Date: Saturday, 4 November 2017

The SR500 Club invites you to join us for a ride down the beautiful Mornington Peninsula!

The route and itinerary is quite flexible, and will be finalised on the day by consensus. One definite stop, however, will be at Andy Strapz‘s shop in Seaford!

Other options for stops along the way include Antique Motorcycles (Cheltenham) and adjoining Naked Racer Café, Old Classic Motorcycle Warehouse (Seaford), and TT Motorcycles (Mornington).

For those riding in from the west, Andy Hunt will be at the United petrol station on the West Gate Freeway (the one on the city-bound side of the Freeway) at 8.30am (for a 9.00am departure).

If you wish to join the ride ‘en route’, please contact Andy Hunt (0418 361 810) to arrange a meeting place and time.

Snowy Mountains Ride (21-24 Nov 2017) UPDATE #2

Start date: Tuesday, 21 November 2017
End date: Friday, 24 November 2017

Come riding in the Snowy Mountains with the SR500 Club!

UPDATE (25-Oct): The Snowy Mountains Ride is only a few weeks away, so hopefully all those attending have their bikes sorted and their accommodation booked! The roads in the Snowy Mountains are steep and twisty so it’s important that everyone rides at their own pace and within their capabilities. The ride group will be stopping at all major intersections and points of interest to re-group, so hopefully nobody gets lost or left behind. It is highly recommended that riders who are new to the Snowies have a look at some maps before leaving home. As the weather in the mountains can be variable, the route of the ride can change; nothing is set in concrete. The only thing for sure is that we are going to enjoy some amazing roads and scenery!

Wednesday, 22 November 2017: Meet at the servo in Khancoban at 8:30am for a 9:00am departure. The group will ride to Jindabyne for lunch, stopping at several points of interest along the way, including Murray 1 power station, Scammels Lookout, and Geehi Hut. We will ride past Thredbo, and if you wish to stop there, beware of the Park Rangers, who love giving out parking tickets! There is fuel in Jindabyne. Lunch will be at the Nuggets Crossing shopping centre on the RHS of the road. Departing Jindabyne, the group will ride to Berridale where we’ll turn left towards the Snowy Mountains Hwy / Adaminaby (regroup here; look for The Big Trout!), and then on to Kiandra where we turn left to Cabramurra and Khancoban. Cabramurra is Australia’s highest town, so we’ll stop there for refreshments while you buy your souvenirs! We will get back to Khancoban around 4:00pm, giving us plenty of time for refreshments and dinner at the pub.

Thursday, 23 November 2017: Meet at the servo in Khancoban at 8:30am for a 9:00am departure. Ride to Tumut for lunch/fuel via Tooma/Tumbarumba/Batlow. Lots of places for lunch in the main street. Return to Khancoban via Snowy Mountains Hwy through Talbingo (look out for emus!). Re-group at the ‘T’ intersection where we turn to Khancoban via Cabramurra, where we will stop for refreshments and more souvenirs! We will get back to Khancoban around 4:00pm, giving us plenty of time for refreshments and dinner at the pub.

Friday, 24 November 2017:  It’s time to go to the SR Rally in Bethanga! Meet at the servo in Khancoban at 8:30am for a 9:00am departure. Leaving Khancoban, we will ride towards Corryong and turn right at the ‘T’ intersection towards Towong. This road will take us through Tintaldra and Walwa along the sublime Murray River Rd. Lots of fast sweepers and sometimes, Highway Patrol cars, so again, eyes up and ride within your limits! This road basically leads us into Bethanga; however, for those who haven’t had enough corners or can’t wait for the SR group ride on Saturday, you can opt to turn left and do the Granya Gap and ride on to the Rally via Tallangatta.

What to bring:

  • map
  • puncture repair kit
  • wet weather gear
  • common sense, and plenty of it!

What to remember:

  • check and service your bike, weeks before the ride
  • make sure your tyres are in good shape
  • study maps, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area

Enjoy the ride, and ride within your limits!

UPDATE (13-Oct): “Not long now until the Club’s annual Rally at Bethanga, and the new, pre-Rally Snowy Mountains ride! For those of you wishing to join a group ride to Bethanga and on to Khancoban on Tuesday 21 November, we will be meeting at the BP servo at Yea at 8:30am for a 9:00am sharp departure via Mansfield, Whitfield, etc. Craig Lemon will be leading the ride from Yea. We will set up our camp at Bethanga and meet up with other members there before departing for Khancoban at about 2:30pm for the start of our Snowy Mountains adventure. All the ride details are below. If you haven’t already booked your accommodation in Khancoban, you’d better get onto it now! Looking forward to a great ride and Rally!” Tony Jones.

Bethanga, the site of the SR500 Club’s Annual Rally, is right on the doorstep of some of the best motorcycle riding roads in Australia – the beautiful Snowy Mountains. If you haven’t ridden in the Snowy Mountains before, do yourself a favour and come along with like-minded riders for a couple of days and experience the wonderful scenery and quiet, sealed roads that cater for all riding styles and abilities.

The group will ride through the Snowy Mountains for a couple of days during the week prior to the Rally and then meander back to Bethanga on Friday to join the regular Rally festivities. Khancoban, NSW (150 km East of Bethanga via the river road), will be our base from which the daily rides will start and finish on Wednesday and Thursday. Each ride will cover approx. 320 km per day. The ride back to Bethanga will be on the Murray Valley Hwy and the Granya Gap. Total distance of the ride will be just over 900 km, if you ride each day. Some of the roads go through remote areas so it’s very important that your bike, and especially its tyres, are in good condition.

The plan for the ride will be totally fluid, so riders can join or leave it as they wish. You can do the full ride or just one day, or perhaps half a day – it’s up to you. As a guide, I (Tony) personally plan on setting up my tent in Bethanga on the Tuesday (21 Nov) prior to the Rally and then travelling that afternoon to Khancoban where I will be staying Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. The rides out of Khancoban will depart at 9:00am each day from the service station (there’s only one, so you can’t miss it!), and will return around 3:00pm or so – later if you make a lot of stops to take in the scenery.

There are plenty of accommodation options in Khancoban, ranging from inexpensive camping and cabins through to self-contained motel rooms at the local pub, to very nice multi-room cabins which are perfect for a small group of 3 or 4 riders, or couples, to share with cooking facilities/BBQ’s, etc. Contact details for each of these options are posted below for your consideration. If you think you might like to attend the ride, I’d suggest you make your accommodation bookings early, as at this time of year, the region is extremely popular with motorcyclists, campers, fishermen, etc.

Breakfast is available at several cafes in town, and dinner at the hotel or Country Club.

Accommodation details are as follows.  Suggest you check out the facilities and prices on their websites.

For planning purposes, the SR500 Club Rally will be held in Bethanga, VIC, on the weekend of 24-26 November, 2017. The SR500 Club Snowy Mountains Ride will be based in Khancoban, NSW, from Tuesday 21 November through Friday 24 November, 2017.

The Club’s Snowy Mountains Ride is open to all SR500 Club members, their partners and any non-members or mates you may wish to invite.

For more information, contact Tony Jones (0419 150 669).

Start date: Thursday, 15 March 2018
End date: Sunday, 25 March 2018

UPDATE (13-Oct): Places on the Spirit of Tasmania are filling fast, so if you are planning on attending the Club ride in March 2018, you had better book NOW! As of today, 13 October, 2017, there are currently NO motorcycle spots left on the evening sailing on Thursday 15 March, so you may have to alter your travel plans. Spots on the return trip (Saturday 24 March) are still available, but will no doubt will fast. Accommodation options will also be limited if you don’t do something soon, so you are encouraged to BOOK NOW! Just so we have an idea of numbers, please confirm your departure and return dates to Tony Jones (

Following on from the Club’s successful trip to Tasmania in March 2016, the Club is proposing to return to the Apple Isle in March 2018.

Tasmania offers many tourist attractions, fabulous motorcycling roads, beautiful scenery, and good weather (usually!) in March.  Again, Tasmania offers fabulous motorcycle roads just in case you missed it the first time!

The Club proposes that the group ride will depart Melbourne on the evening of Thursday, 15 March 2018 on the Spirit of Tasmania, and return on the Spirit’s evening sailing on Saturday, 24 March 2018.

Those interested in attending may wish to depart and/or return earlier or later, and this is totally at your discretion. Please see the preliminary itinerary to get an idea of what we have in mind for the trip.

IMPORTANT! The Club will not be organising a group booking with the ferry operator, or any accommodation. It will be each individual participant’s responsibility to book their own fares and accommodation.
