Snowy Mountains ride (19-22 Nov 2019)

Start date: Tuesday, 19 November 2019
End date: Friday, 22 November 2019

UPDATE (as at 01/10/2019): For those planning on attending the Club’s organised ride in the Snowy Mountains, hopefully by now you have booked your accommodation and given your bikes a once over to ensure that they are in good shape for the ride.

This year’s group ride will be departing Bethanga Recreation Reserve on Tuesday, 19 November, no later than 3.00pm. We will ride via the Granya Gap to the Murray Valley Hwy and on to Khancoban via Corryong, arriving in Khancoban at approx. 5.00pm. For those not wishing to join the group ride, we’ll see you at the pub in Khancoban for drinks/dinner on Tuesday evening!

On Wednesday and Thursday, we will be cruising around the beautiful Snowy Mountains on some of the best twisty back roads in the country and possibly enjoying an ale or three at the end of the day! On Friday morning we plan to ride back to Bethanga via Towong and along the River Road, with a coffee stop in Walwa, and possibly lunch in Tallangatta. All plans are fluid on this ride and are modified to suit the group and the prevailing weather conditions

We are expecting a group of about 10-12 riders, but hopefully more decide to come along. If you have any questions or would like more details about the ride, please call Tony Jones on 0419 150 669.

Bethanga, the site of the SR500 Club’s Annual Rally, is right on the doorstep of some of the best motorcycle riding roads in Australia – the beautiful Snowy Mountains.

If you didn’t ride the Snowy Mountains with us in Nov 2017, do yourself a favour and come along with like-minded riders for a couple of days and experience the wonderful scenery and quiet, sealed roads that cater for all riding styles and abilities.

The plan will be to ride through the Snowy Mountains for a couple of days during the week prior to the Rally and then meander back to Bethanga on the Friday (22 Nov) to join the regular Rally festivities.

Khancoban, NSW (150 km east of Bethanga via the river road), will be the base from which the daily rides will start and finish on the Wednesday and Thursday. Each ride will cover approx. 320 km per day. The ride back to Bethanga will be on the Murray Valley Hwy and the Granya Gap. Total distance of the ride will be just over 900 km, if you ride each day.

Note: Some of the routes are through remote areas, so it’s very important that your bike, and especially its tyres, are in good condition!

Daily route plans are flexible, so riders can join or leave as they wish. You can do the full ride, just one day, or even half a day – it’s up to you!

As a guide, attendees on the 2017 ride set up their tents in Bethanga on the Tuesday prior to the Rally and then travelled that afternoon to Khancoban where they stayed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. The rides out of Khancoban departed at 9.00am each day from the service station, and returned around 3.00pm, or so.

There are plenty of accommodation options in Khancoban, ranging from inexpensive camping and cabins, self-contained motel rooms at the local pub, to very nice multi-room cabins which are perfect for a small group of 3 or 4 riders (or couples) to share, with cooking facilities/BBQs, etc. Contact details for these options are given below for your info.

Booking accommodation early is recommended, as at that time of year, the region is extremely popular with motorcyclists, campers, fishermen, etc.

Breakfast is available at several cafés in town, and dinner at the hotel or Country Club.

The Snowy Mountains ride is open to all SR500 Club members, partners, and any non-members or friends you may wish to invite.

Those interested in attending may wish to depart and/or return earlier or later, and this is totally at your discretion.

There is no specific itinerary at this stage. If there is sufficient interest in the trip, then an itinerary will be drawn up closer to the time.
